Common Reasons Your iPhone 17e Stays Silent
Several things can cause your phone to miss calls silently. The usual suspects include having silent mode on, an active Focus or Do Not Disturb schedule, the ringer volume being too low, or a temporary software glitch. Sometimes issues start after an iOS update or when connected to a Bluetooth accessory.
Fixing Your iPhone 17e's Ringer
Check Your Silent Mode
The iPhone 17e uses an Action Button instead of a physical switch. By default, press and hold this button to toggle between ring and silent modes. A visual indicator will appear in the Dynamic Island to confirm the change.
To customize what the Action Button does, go to Settings > Action Button. You can swipe to choose Silent Mode, Camera, Flashlight, or a custom Shortcut.
Turn Off Do Not Disturb and Focus
Focus modes and Do Not Disturb silence calls and alerts. You'll see the missed call later without ever hearing it ring.
Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. If the moon icon is highlighted, tap it to turn Do Not Disturb off.
You should also check Settings > Focus. Review each Focus profile (like Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work) and make sure they are all turned off. Also check the "Turn on Automatically" section to disable any schedules.
Increase the Ringer Volume
Your ringer volume might be set too low. First, unlock your phone. Then press the Volume Up button on the side to raise the level. You can also adjust it in Settings > Sounds & Haptics by dragging the Ringer and Alerts slider.
Try a Different Ringtone
A simple change can sometimes kickstart the ringer. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and select a new default tone. Have a friend call you to test it.
Disconnect Bluetooth Accessories
If your iPhone 17e is connected to wireless headphones or a speaker, incoming calls may route there. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle it off to make sure calls ring through your phone's speaker.
Review Blocked Contacts
Verify you haven't accidentally blocked the caller. Go to Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts to see the list. If the number is there, you can unblock it.
Disable Call Forwarding
If call forwarding is on, your calls are sent to another number. Go to Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding and ensure the setting is turned OFF.
Turn Off Silence Unknown Callers
This helpful feature can also cause you to miss calls. When enabled, it sends any number not in your contacts straight to voicemail. Check Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and turn it off if needed.
Restart Your iPhone
A basic restart clears many temporary glitches. To force restart your iPhone 17e, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear.
Install iOS Updates
Apple releases updates to fix bugs. Make sure your iPhone 17e is running the latest version of iOS 26. Connect to Wi-Fi, ensure you have enough battery, and go to Settings > General > Software Update.
Reset All Settings
This returns all your preferences to default without erasing personal data. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Tap "Reset All Settings" and enter your passcode.
Reset Network Settings
If calls from internet apps like WhatsApp aren't ringing, this can help. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Tap "Reset Network Settings" and confirm. You'll need to rejoin Wi-Fi networks afterward.
Erase All Content and Settings
Use this as a last resort. Be absolutely sure to back up your iPhone 17e first. Then go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Enter your passcode and follow the prompts to wipe the device.
Restore via Computer
If erasing didn't work, a full restore might. Connect your phone to a computer using a USB-C cable. Open Finder (on Mac) or iTunes (on Windows), select your device, and choose the option to Restore iPhone. This installs a clean copy of iOS.
Tips for App Calling Issues
If the problem is only with calls from apps like Skype or WhatsApp, try these steps. First, update the app from the App Store. Check the app's notification permissions in Settings. You can also try switching your cellular data to 4G in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data, or try making calls over Wi-Fi instead.
If you've tried all these steps and your iPhone 17e still won't ring, it's best to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for further diagnosis.
